Old t-shirts: Everyone has some. Around my house a lot of said old T-shirts are tie-dyed. Not a Grateful Dead fan in sight, yet we have a lot of tie-dye.
I decided to take some of those shirts off my family's (or I should say my husband’s) back and onto my crochet hook. Yup, you can make old T-shirts into yarn. That yarn looks especially cool when the original t-shirt was tie-dyed.
SUPPLIES
- T-shirt yarn
- Hot glue gun
- Terra cotta pot
- Scissors
- Crochet hook
- Plant
I’m not going to go into the specifics of how to cut your T-shirt the right way. There are a enough tutorials online for that. I watched a YouTube video that showed me everything I needed to know. It is a matter of folding and strategic cutting.
Once you have your long strip, you tug on the jersey material and it will curl in on itself creating yarn. From there all you have to do is roll it into a ball.
I’m also not going to explain crochet to you. Are you thinking to yourself: What the hell are you going to tell me then? I’m getting to the good part, just hang on.Crochet your yarn into a LONG strip.
Starting at the bottom of your empty pot, wind your crocheted strip into a coiled pattern.
Determine how low you want your plant to hang and how long you want the strings on the sides of your plant. Keep in mind that jersey stretches, so when you put your plant in the weight will make the pot hang a bit lower.
So take a long strip and fold it in half. Fold it in half again. Tie a knot at the top leaving a loop for hanging.
Cut the long strings. You may need to trim so that all four strands are the same length.
Glue the tips of the four strands on the hanger to your pot. Continue wrapping your long crocheted strand over where you attached the hangers all the way to the top.
Insert a plant.
Hang and enjoy.
