After moving to North Carolina (aka paradise!), both my roommate and I arrived with very little to our names and zero furniture. A combination of a new job, excessive pinning, and now living with an designer, my creativity flame has been ignited and has no sign of stopping. I was a project or two in before I started keeping track of what I was doing. What project am I completing now?
A crate night stand!
My supplies were simple:
– 2 crates from Michael’s <- love that store! - Chalky Finish Color from DecoArt Americana
– Minwax Wood Finish (Dark Walnut) – I used some I had leftover from a table project
– Sandpaper
– Paint brushes
– Tarp and rags for cleanliness
First things first – sanding down a few rough edges! I didn’t spend too much time on this since I like the rustic/unfinished look to some extent.
Then came the fun part – staining. I find this almost therapeutic and very relaxing. Messy, a tad smelly, and a whole lot of fun…what more could a girl want! It’s also a 3 step process: brush on stain, let it soak in a bit, rub off excess. I only applied one layer to this and on the outer part of the crates.
After some crummy weather and busy evenings, I came back to it a few days laters. The extra time allowed the stain to really set in and gave me a great foundation to continue. Blue was up first. The color was a lot softer and subtle than I though but it was very soothing and I love it!
After the blue and yellow were on, I touched up the rest of the crates and let them set for a day or so to dry completely. Check it out!
It’s the perfect size and adds a little extra something to my work-in-progress room. I’m sure it’ll be the first of many projects to come!
Until next time!
