Emilie had a difficult time finding the right shade of green lipstick a few years ago as she prepared her latest cosplay costume. By the time she located the correct color online and then added in shipping and handling, she was paying more than she bargained for. While coloring with her little brothers and sisters she finally found the color she was looking for right in the Crayola box.
Crayons are made from pigment dyed wax which sounds very similar to the lipstick tubes that fill my makeup bag. We have lots of crayons in our craft box, but we took this opportunity to check out out local arts supply store. There are so many more colors to choose from than you can find in the traditional box of 24.
For two tubes of lipstick, you will need:
- 1 crayon
- 1 teaspoon shea butter
- 1 teaspoon castor oil
First, select which color crayon you would like to use.
Unwrap and break the crayon into smaller pieces to help them melt quickly.
Place the crayon into a glass bowl on top of a pot of boiling water, being careful not to let the bottom of the bowl touch the water.
Stir in the shea butter and castor oil.
Mix until well incorporated.
Pour the mixture into a small container or empty plastic tube (making sure the base is twisted down to the bottom before filling.)
Place your lipstick in the refrigerator and let harden for about an hour. You can also place your finished containers in the freezer to speed things up a bit.
You can choose to stick with traditional colors or experiment with different color combinations. Have fun and try out a bright shade of magenta or step totally out of the box and test out a shade of green or blue.
