Simple, straightforward Halloween costumes can be hard to come by — especially when you start diving into the dark depths of Pinterest. If you're looking to create your own fast and easy costume this holiday, look no further than this awesome DIY masquerade mask.
You'll need:
- a box or leftover cardboard
- scissors
- spray paint
- hot glue
- ribbon
1. Draw and cut a mask.
Using a pen, draw you mask shape onto the cardboard. I used Google images for inspiration. Cut out the mask. Then, fold it in half to check the symmetry. Trim where necessary to make the sides identical.
Holding the mask up to your face, mark two eye spots on the cardboard. Draw and cut out one eye hole. Fold the mask in half and trace the second eye hole on the other side. Then, cut that one out too.
2. Add some accents.
Masquerade masks are rarely flat. They have texture and sparkle and plenty of flair. Cut some shapes from the leftover cardboard and hot glue them to the mask to create some fun features. If you want to get really detailed, you can use the hot glue to draw swirls, dots, lines and more. I opted for one large accent down the center and two smaller accents over the eyes.
I also love the feathers on traditional masks. Since I have ample amounts of cardboard from too many Amazon orders, but no feathers in the house, I decided to cut out some fun feathers too. But, I had special plans for them, they weren't getting glued on just yet.
3. Paint!
Give your mask a coat or two of a fabulous color. I went with teal knowing that it would be a fun bright accent to any neutral dress. The feather accents, though, got a touch of gold metallic spray paint.
4. Take care of the finishing touches.
To complete the mask, I just had to glue on my gold feathers at the top, then add a fun silky ribbon for tying it on. With both in place, it's ready to go!
Having only spent $10 on spray paint, I couldn't be happier with how my truly cheap Halloween costume has turned out. My gorgeous mask will work perfectly with both my solid black and white cocktail dresses. So, now, I have multiple outfit options for the full weekend of parties without having to blow my budget on more than one costume. Too awesome and way too easy!
