DIY December: Quote Cards

DIY-3December has been flying by, and the New Year is just around the corner! I realized that I have not done a DIY post in quite a while, so I thought I would write a post about one of my favorite crafts: making quote cards. This post is holiday themed, but you can use these cards for any occasion. I will be giving these cards alongside gifts this holiday season, and making them was a great study break from my Finals Week. So, without further ado, let's begin! :)

What You Will Need:

  • Craft cards with envelopes (these are sold in most craft stores, and have a light brown tone to them)
  • A glue stick
  • A silver sharpie or similar writing utensil (I am using a paint marker)
  • Spools of colored twine or string
  • Scissors
  • Printed quotes (I used quotes out of a book called Think Happy, Be Happy that I purchased for craft purposes)
  • Sparkly sequins
  • A hole punch
  • A surface to glue on (I recommend a piece of printer paper or thin fabric to prevent messes on countertops and other surfaces)

Instructions:

  1. Unwrap all materials, and set to the side. Browse through and select your favorite quotes from a quote book or the Internet (you can print them out on a colored printer, just make sure that the sizes line up).
  2. Cut out your favorite quotes, and adjust as needed to fit on the front of the card. Here is where you can be creative! I chose to cut the corners off of mine to give them a more unique shape, but you can use patterned scissors and other techniques to get the desired effect. Set these quotes to the side.
  3. Put down a piece of printer paper or thin cloth as a gluing surface (to protect surfaces from glue messes). Using the glue stick, apply glue to the back of the quote and affix where desired on the front of the card. I am a fan of the purple glue sticks as it is easier to see how much glue you have applied. Smooth out any wrinkles in the image, and set to the side to dry. Repeat with as many quotes and cards as desired.
  4. Once the images have dried onto the cards, take a hole punch and punch two holes along the crease of the card (the lefthand side). These holes should be about an inch and a half (at least) apart, but can be made in unique configurations for each card. Once you have two holes punched in each card, gather up your twine or string.
  5. Choose your desired twine or string color for each card, and cut sections of about nine inches for each card. Thread the twine/string through each hole, beginning at the bottom of the card so that both ends of the twine/string are coming up through the card. Tie the ends of the twine/string into a bow, and adjust as needed for the desired look.
  6. Now for the really fun part! Take your sequins, stickers, glitter, and other accessories and decorate each card as desired. For some I used a lot of additional decoration, and for others I added more simple details. It is completely up to you!
  7. Set the cards out to dry completely before writing in them. Draw festive designs on the front of the envelopes using the silver sharpie if desired.

I hope you enjoyed this week's DIY post, and let me know in the comments if you would like to see more posts like this in the future! If you decide to make cards of your own, I would love to see them! Tag me on Twitter @alyssa_debella with your designs! :)
