I actually got an idea, bought the materials and completed the project!
This is how my morning started:

Then my mother called and informed me that she was going to the Dollar Store and the Hardware Store. A light bulb went on and lit up my mildly awake brain and I told her that I wanted to go with her!
So, after an hour of shopping:

1 package of Magnetic numbers and letters: $5.99
