I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but everyone at my house is excited about Christmas and ready to decorate. That means it is time to get crafty! Here’s how to make your own handprint wreath mini garden flag.
What you need:
- Hankerchief
- Fabric paint
- Paint brush
- Ribbon
- Paper plate (cut a 3 inch circle out of the middle)
- Needle and thread
- Sewing machine
What to do:
Making the flag:
1. Cut the hankerchief down to 12 1/2 inches by 22 inches.
2. Fold over raw edge about 1/4 inch and sew. I chose to zigzag stitch both sides for a more decorative look.
3. Fold top 2 inches down and sew to create a pocket for the rod.
4. Cover the work space with newspaper or paper towels.
5. Place the 3 inch paper plate circle down in the middle of the flag.
6. Paint your child’s hand with the fabric paint and press down onto flag. Fingers should point away from the inner circle.
7. Reapply paint for each handprint and go all the way around the paper center. (have the children wash hands immediately)
8. Allow to dry.
You can finish decorating wreath and flag to your liking. I chose to write “Merry Christmas!”, put fingerprint dots on the wreath, and add a bow.
Making the bow:
1. Cut four 12 inch lengths of ribbon.
2. Stack them together and fold in half.
3. Using a threaded needle, pierce through center of fold. Keep ribbons on the middle of the needle. Do NOT pull the thread through.
4. Fan ribbons out.
5. Bring one end of the ribbons at a time onto the needle creating a loops.
6. After all loops are formed, pull thread through the bow. Make a couple of stitches to secure bow. Tie off thread.
7. Cut a 24 inch length of ribbon and tie around middle of bow to cover stitches.
8. Sew bow onto flag.
