With the growing popularity of the Food Network over the past few years, the level of cooking in the average home is more impressive than ever. Dishes once only seen in 5-star restaurants are now gracing our own kitchen tables. As I thought about the new levels of creativity that people were bringing to their kitchen, I felt it was time that we channeled that same level of creativity into the home kitchen decor. However, before you start searching the internet for novelty plates, why not consider transforming everyday kitchen items into pieces of art?
Pizza Paddle Paintings
I originally saw this easy design idea on an episode of Restaurant Impossible and thought it would make a great piece of art in any home kitchen. Simply find a pizza paddle from your kitchen supply store and paint it. One idea is to get 3 small paddles and use them to spell out the word “eat.” Another more rustic idea is to decoupage a map of Italy on the board and then, write a cute Italian expression on it like “Mangi” or “Ciao”
Magnetic Spice Rack
It’s time you upgraded that spice rack you made in woodshop. For this project, you will need a large picture frame, a magnetic sheet metal, chalkboard spray paint, chalk, baby food jars, neodymium disc magnets, some epoxy type adhesive glue and of course, your spices. Take the dimensions of the frame to your local home depot and have them cut some sheet metal to fit it. When you get it home, use the chalkboard paint to spray two coats unto the sheet metal. While this dries, begin transferring your spices into separate baby food jars. Attach the disc magnets unto the top of the jar lids with the adhesive glue. Once everything has completely dried, begin arranging the jars in rows with the magnetic lid facing the sheet metal. Use the chalk to write the name of each spice above the appropriate jar. Lastly, mount the sheet metal in the frame and hang it.
Soup Ladle Sconces
Soup ladle sconces are the perfect way to add a bit of rustic charm to any kitchen. Visit your local thrift store to buy several metal ladles. I recommend finding ones in a dark or rusted metal in order to achieve that rustic. In addition, make sure the spoon part is deep and wide enough to hold your candles. Next, simply use a drill to attach it to your wall. If you don’t want these candles to be a permanent fixture, line several of them in a row and mount them unto a wooden backing. This way you have the option of transferring them to other parts of the house.
Eating is just as much an experience for the eyes as it is for the mouth, so these projects are sure to make all your visits to the kitchen extra tasty!
