Chestnut Spider Web Weaving
If you are anything like us… you have found all the Chestnut trees in your neighborhood, and go for weekly – sometimes daily – walks to pick up literally buckets of shiny new Chestnuts!!
What to do with your stash? We made spider webs!
This is a great activity! I love making things from stuff you find! Older children will be able to do this all on their own, younger children may need a little help.
Materials:
- Shiny new Chestnuts
- Wooden skewers
- Scraps of wool or string or ribbon (we used wool)
How?
- First set up the web frame by pushing the wooden skewers into the chestnuts. The outside shell can be a little hard so I started the hole with a metal skewer and then removed it and pushed further with the wooden one. Chestnuts are surprisingly soft on the inside!
- Push the wooden skewer in quite deep (then you do not have to glue it) but be careful not to go all the way through.
- Tie your wool (or string or ribbon) to one of the wooden skewers and off you go!
- Weaving is easy once you get the hang of it! The wool needs to loop around each wooden skewer. It is not enough just to go around under – over – under – over as you would normally do with weaving as the frame is essentially a circle to the wool needs more grip or it all slides into the center!
- We used different color wool. We joined them all first and then went round and round. It is completely up to you to decide how to do this!
