Homemade Lip Gloss - Crafts By Jen

One of my classmates made this for her demonstration speech last week, and I thought it would be a fun and easy thing to do with my girls.  They LOVED the idea of making their own lip gloss, so we went about getting the ingredients needed:

Lip Gloss Supplies

  1. One (1) teaspoon of paraffin wax
  2. Four (4) teaspoons of coconut oil
  3. Four (4) teaspoons of petroleum jelly
  4. Four (4) candy melts
  5. 1/2 teaspoon oil-based candy flavoring
  6. Ziploc baggie
  7. Plastic spoon
  8. Sterilized bead holders or other small containers with lids
  9. Pan of boiling hot water (turned off)

First, we grated the paraffin wax on a plate, measured it out for each girl and then put it in a ziploc baggie.  Next we added the coconut oil, petroleum jelly.  This part is incredibly sticky.  The easiest way to get the oil and jelly off of the measuring spoon is using the plastic spoon.  Even then, have a wet paper towel handy.

Then add the candy melts and the flavoring.  Because the only candy flavoring I could find were the small, ultra-concentrated bottles from Hobby Lobby, I used 1/4 of a teaspoon instead.

Next we dipped the baggies into a pan that had pre-boiled water in it and clipped the baggie to the edges of the pan.  I used a fork to push the baggies around in the water until all of the contents were melted together and the ingredients were well mixed.

After that, I removed each of the bags and snipped a corner from the bag to squeeze the contents in to small containers.

Boiling and Transferring

We put the lids on the containers and placed them in the fridge to cool completely (about 30-60 minutes).

That’s it!  Total prep time was about 10 minutes.

You can add cute labels to the top and have your girls give them as gifts!!

Total price $30.00-ish:

  • Box of paraffin wax:  $4.99 at Hobby Lobby
  • 1 jar of Coconut Oil:  $9.99 at Whole Foods
  • 1 jar of (unscented) Petroleum Jelly:  $0 – already had
  • 2 packages of Candy Melts – $2.99 each at Hobby Lobby
  • 2 packages of Candy Flavoring – $3.49 each at Hobby Lobby
  • 1 package of 12 small paint pots – $2.99 at Hobby Lobby

I bought larger, flat containers but they were all twisted together and not separate (which will be returned) so I didn’t include them in the total.  It was a little pricey to get all of the ingredients.  But the only thing that we would need to make it again is little containers.  With the ingredients that we have, I could easily make 60-80 more containers of lip gloss before I would need to replenish the flavoring.  I have enough oil, jelly, wax and melts to make at least 120 more containers (depending on size).  When you look at it from that perspective, the cost isn’t so bad.

I think this is a great idea for little girls birthday parties or sleepovers.  Or just a Saturday afternoon, hanging out with your daughters.  Try it and let me know what you think!
