I’m a DIY girl at heart.
I love being creative and using my hands to craft things. Most of the time it’s an article or a story, but sometimes it’s a true physical craft. One of my goals for next year is to create more things. I want to get back into art, I want to get back into do-it-yourself projects. I want to reawaken that crafty, creative side of myself.
I used to love sewing my own padded hangers, crocheting scarves or making my own body scrubs, but I got away from all that as I “got busier.” {read: lazy} In 2015, I want to do one fun and crafty project each month.
If you’re interested in exploring some DIY projects yourself, here are five natural beauty product recipes I found to experiment with in 2015. Arts and crafts and beauty?! #Winning.
Five Natural DIY Beauty Products to Make in 2015
Natural Mascara
Mascara is one of those beauty products that I love, and truthfully, the best mascara I’ve ever used was an all-natural one I bought from Whole Foods. The stick was like $15, but my lashes were on point. Personally I really don’t want to have to spend $15 a stick on mascara and still not really know what is in it.
Perhaps by adding a homemade all-natural mascara to my to-be-DIYed list will help.
This recipe is from Wellness Mama:
I posted a picture of my lashes on Instagram last week and mentioned I had finally gotten my homemade mascara just how I wanted it. A lot of you asked for the recipe, so I’m sharing it now.
Natural Mascara?
In the past, I’ve used Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara which has a top safety rating from the Environmental Working Group. That is still my go-to organic mascara but I’m always looking for a DIY option as well.
I must admit- this was one of my most frustrating homemade recipes to figure out. I tried a lot of different combinations before I finally found this one that I liked.

Natural Hair Butter
Since I’m growing my hair out — God, help me if I can actually make it through the winter without cutting it again — I find myself moisturizing my hair on a daily basis. Because my hair is naturally dry, the colder months can be especially harsh for my tresses. The need for an affordable, natural and effective hair moisturizer abounds.
This recipe is from the amazing Hey Fran Hey {love her!} via her YouTube Channel:
The temperatures have officially dropped! That means it's time to pull out the thicker hair butters and creams to protect our strands from harsh winds. An even cooler idea would be to make your own at home, using all natural ingredients and a blender! No stove. No heat. No fuss. And you'll be finished in 5-minutes, tops!

Facial Peel
I mentioned in my previous beauty post about my scars that I’m working to clear up with lemon juice. Well, I recently had a friend who was telling me about the amazing chemical peel she’s been using on her skin for two weeks. I have to say, I was intrigued, but I was also turned off by the idea of spending $40 on harsh chemicals that might leave my sensitive skin worse off.
So in addition to using lemon juice, I’m been wanting a natural facial peel to help speed up the exfoliation process for my scars.
This recipe is all vegan and from Sunny at the Vegan Beauty Review.
Are you ready to rock a kick-ass DIY face peel that’s super easy and affordable to make, sans all the nasty chemicals and preservatives that are often found in conventional store-bought brands? I thought so! ;)
This recipe calls for tropical fruits papaya and pineapple, which are naturally high in fruit acids called alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)–a popular ingredient found in a ton of fancy anti-aging skincare products. AHAs rejuvenate the skin by encouraging the shedding of old, sun-damaged surface skin cells. Papaya and pineapple are also loaded with vitamin C, which promotes the production of collagen in our skin. Win-win!

Bath Salts
Soaking in the tub is one of my favorite activities. Give me a glass of wine, my current book and my tub tray and I’m down to relax, relate and release in the bath.
I love having soothing bath salts to help with this process, but I’m not too keen on some of the scents that are readily available. I love the idea of creating my own.
Here’s another recipe from WellnessMama.
I used to love taking relaxing salt baths when I first got married. Now, most days, bath time just involves me washing many tiny fingers, toes and heads of hair. No complaints, but definitely not as relaxing!
…Salt baths are great for: Stress relief, Reducing muscle aches, Improving circulation, Better nutrient absorption, Headache relief, Relief of acne, eczema or other skin problems, Improving skin hydration and more.

DIY Wax
I’m a beast. I mean that in the hard-working way as well as the extremely hairy way, so yes, I do wax on occasion. There are a few things about the waxing process that I like. Definitely the smoothness of my legs after the fact and the long-lasting results, but I also enjoy the process too, because it’s like a battle of will-power and physical endurance at the same time where I catch myself asking:
Can I endure this temporary pain to get what I want in the end?
{Apply that to all areas of your life}
While waxing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, especially DIY waxing, I like saving up to $100 a visit by waxing myself.
Here’s another recipe video from Hey Fran Hey to create your own sugar wax. I’ve used this recipe before and it worked really well and I hope to do it again in 2015.
