A while back, I heard about the concept of creating invisible messages by using a white crayon and watercolors, so I decided to give it a try for Valentine's Day.  I loved the idea of writing sweet nothings amidst beautiful, soft romantic, colors.  This turned out to be such a fun and easy craft that I'm definitely going to use it again for other occasions-like Date Night.

(Editor's Note:   Be sure to check out my BONUS Date Night idea at the end of this post.)

Here's what you'll need: watercolor paper, white crayon, watercolor paints, and a paint brush.

Process

To get started, I simply grabbed my watercolor paper and cut it down to the size I wanted.  I used some craft scissors to give it a little edging.  Next, I dug through my daughters' crayon box until I found a white crayon.  (Thank goodness I found it in the first crayon bin, phew!) Then I wrote a little message to my hubby.  He's really into bourbon and moonshine these days so I wrote:

You put the moon in my shine

I wanted to make sure the writing stood out amongst the paint, so I went over each letter a few times.  This turned out to be a little trickier than I anticipated because it is actually pretty hard to see white crayon on white paper.  It really does become kind of invisible.  But it turned out pretty well.

Now comes the fun part.  Choose your watercolor paint colors and go to town!  Here's how mine turned out:

Not too shabby, right?  I did go a little heavy with the blue in some spots.  (I haven't used my watercolors in a while).  So, to avoid over saturation, make sure your brush is nice and wet and also don't paint an area more than once.

Grand Finale

I decided to drop my little note in a mason jar and paired it with some bourbon.  (I probably should've paired it with moonshine but what can ya do?)

BONUS Date Night Idea:

As I was doing this craft, I was thinking this would actually be a fun little date night activity.  Get the kids to bed, grab your honey, grab some wine, and grab the above listed supplies.  Then write your own "sweet nothing" to your sweetie!  Swap papers and paint away-decoding the message. Voila! A little bit of art, romance, mystery, and fun--perfect for an easy at home "date."

Have you tried invisible ink yet?  How did you use it? I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Leave me a comment below.
