Before I became a parent, I imagined myself being the ultimate collector of every single art supply item known to man.
I would dream about being the privileged owner of an impressively large, immaculate closet that Carrie Bradshaw herself would absolutely drool over.
Only these shelves would be filled with the finest paintbrushes that were neatly organized amongst color coordinated paints, stencils, paper and glue galore.
On rainy days, I would entertain and stimulate my growing children’s minds with intricate art projects and adorable arts and crafts that we would proudly display on our refrigerator and frame as gifts for family members. I would host painting parties for all of their friends to attend, and my future children would have that little twinkle in their eyes as they looked up at me with their equally little artsy, creative brains.
Oh, I had these very visions many a time but then something happened one day that brought this all to a screeching halt. I became a parent.
Yes, I became a parent and in between the endless laundry, potty training and meal prep, I came to terms with the painful truth that I’m just not crafty. This little revelation was buried in said endless loads of laundry, thanks to my best friend Amanda. Because of her admirable art talents, I have been able to fly under the crafting radar with her endless entertainment for my girls with truly perfect Pinterest-like art projects.
Now, let’s fast forward to about two weeks ago when America’s Community Network asked for me to lead viewers through a fun and easy DIY art project for one of the segments. I nearly lost my lunch over the idea of demonstrating my “skills,” all while remembering my lines and appearing confident, poised and capable of providing this quick mom tip.
Well, it didn’t take me long to come to the conclusion that in order to properly pull this segment off, I had to pitch the network an achievable and cute idea like this:
The above is the final product of a super easy arts and crafts project that my almost 4 year old did all by herself. It required:
- Minimal Supplies!
- Minimal Cost!
- Minimal Mess!
- Minimal Skills!
And a whole lot of fun for the kids AND for me! Who would have thought?
Even I felt confident doing this one on camera and again with my girls yesterday. Here are the simple supplies that you’ll need in order to recreate this masterpiece with your little ones:
- Colorful Paper
- A Bunch of Celery
- A Paintbrush
- String
- Red and Green Paint (or any other color that you already have)
Okay parents, follow these super easy steps and you and your kiddos will be on your way to designing your very own original flower painting that is perfect for any season:
- Tie a piece of string to both ends of the celery.
- Parents and caregivers, this is where you’ll come in because you now need to cut the celery in half with a sharp knife.
- Your mini Picasso may now use the paintbrush to apply the paint to one of the ends of the celery bunch.
- Apply the painted celery to the paper, hold down as firmly as possible for about 3 seconds and viola! You have a beautiful red flower on your paper.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 as you wish in order to create any design you like!
- Lastly, take a clean paintbrush and use the green paint to design the stems and leaves on each flower.
Do note that you can use all types of fruits and veggies to create unique and fun paintings with your kids. Next time, we are going to try to roll painted corn to make polka dots and lemon, apple and pepper slices to make a variety of fun shapes!
So, there you have it! If you’re like me and you aspire to get in touch with your artsy side along with your kids, this quick and easy DIY flower painting is a perfect project for you!
