We set out to create a gender neutral nursery when we found out the news that we were expecting a baby. We started by painting the walls a neutral color, Benjamin Moore's Moonshine (color-matched at Sherwin Williams). We only needed one gallon of paint because the wainscoting was already done in white, and it's a small room. We had previously added some DIY wainscoting to the room to give it a more quaint look, and it worked out perfectly for a nursery.
See the wainscoting post on my blog for how to add the wood slats without full wood paneling for the same look for less money.
I tried to make use of a lot of the furnishings we already had to save money and repurpose items. The rocker was set to go, since I had previously bought it off of Craiglist and painted with ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) in Graphite.
I updated the dresser as well with a coat of ASCP in French Linen.
Now we can use it as a changing table, and it looks more like a nursery dresser. I added a small cart from World Market to use for storage by the changing table.
The black and white rug we already had, along with the baskets and a storage organizer from Target.
Once we found out we were expecting a girl, besides all my future daydreams of tea parties and American Girl dolls....I decided to add some gender specific wall art with a gallery wall.
I used some mismatched frames and vintage pieces to make the gallery wall with things I already had. The ABC print is from the store Sobo Style which is sadly no longer in business. The framed flower art is a vintage crewel piece I bought awhile ago from Etsy and never really found a place for. The other art was handmade or a DIY (see the swiss cross post). I also framed a greeting card, a sand dollar, an old music sheet, and a mini bunting I made from cardstock and twine for some easy art.
I especially like the quote from Louisa May Alcott: "I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship." Plus it is pink, so it's a win, win.
Our families gifted us with the white crib (from the Target Eddie Bauer line), as well as the crib bedding (Pottery Barn Kids). The wall art with the prayer I found on Instagram @susie_harris42. She does hand painted signs, some of which have been featured on the TV show the Fixer Upper on HGTV.
I contemplated knitting a mobile, but decided my skills didn't extend that far...so we ended up going with a crocheted sheep mobile I found on Etsy from EllaLeeRoseOriginals.
The bookwreath I had already made and will be offering a tutorial on soon.
One of my favorite things in the nursery is the mini pair of moccasins we got in Canada when we were visiting Vancouver this summer.
Hope you like what we've done and you get some DIY ideas of your own.
Our nursery is also listed on Project Nursery's website. So feel free to check it out. Project Nursery-Vintage Cottage Nursery.
