To make some summer decor I decided to make some pinwheels in patriotic colors for our end table. They're fun and give off a whimsy vibe that reminds me of looking forward in earnest for summer vacation as a kid (and even now as a school teacher--cough, cough).
Materials:
1) Scissors
2) Oversized Buttons, assorted sizes
3) Wooden Kabob Sticks (I got these at the grocery store)
4) Hot Glue Gun
5) Circular Item to Trace (I used a few Mason Jar Lids in different sizes)
6) Ruler or Quilting Ruler
7) Scrapbook Tape
8) Scrapbook Paper--in assorted red, white, and blue colors
Step 1:
*Cut out two strips of scrapbook paper (12" by 3"), using the ruler to draw and cut a straight line.
Step 2:
*Fold the paper strips back and forth accordion style every 1/2 an inch or so.
Step 3:
*Next use the scrapbook tape to link the two accordion strips to make one long strip of paper, by taping the ends together.
Step 4:
*Close the ends together with scrapbook tape in a rosette shape.
Step 5:
*Trace a circle of scrapbook paper in a coordinating color using a glass or Mason Jar lid for a circle shape. Cut out the circle and glue on the front of your pinwheel.
Step 6:
*Turning the pinwheel over to the back, hot glue-gun a wooden kabob stick to the middle of your pinwheel.
Step 7:
*To finish add a button to the front of the pinwheel, also using hot glue.
*Note I varied the size of my pinwheels by making the width (of the scrapbook strips) different, ranging from 2"-3". In some cases for a small pinwheel I shortened the length from under 12" when there was extra paper when folding the accordion shape into a circle.
I placed the pinwheels in a jar of sand to keep them upright, but you could also place them in a vase. I'm leaving these babies up all some long!
Let me know of an summer decorations you've made. Enjoy!
