Now that the moving boxes are dwindling at our new place, we can finally plant our balcony garden! If you don’t have a yard or room for a sprawling in-ground garden, pots are the way to go.
It’s easy to spend $40 per pot at the local plant store, if you want something decent looking or ceramic. I didn’t want to spend $400 on containers for my 10 plants, so I bought basic plastic pots, and introduced them to my collection of spray paints.
What you need:
- Plastic planting pots
- White primer spray paint (for plastic)
- Stone texture spray paint
- Metallic silver spray paint
- Masking tape (or painters tape)
- Any sort of plastic (trash bags, bubble wrap, etc…)
To ensure you end up with a nice clean line, first tape a straight line, and then follow with plastic.
Spray the containers with white primer, and let it dry per the can instructions. Unless of course you find white plastic pots to begin with! (I tried to find some, but no luck.)
Tape off any sections you don’t want sprayed, and go to town. The instructions for spraying vary by can, so just follow whatever your can says to do.
I didn’t want the insides of my containers spray painted, because I didn’t want to take the chance that the paint could leach into the dirt and then into my tomatoes! I’m not even sure it’s possible, but if it’s a concern, then just don’t paint the insides. Better safe than sorry, I always say.
I think the tomatoes will like their new home.
