Last Minute No Sew DIY Emmet
From The Lego Movie Costume
I am sure this has NEVER happened to you.
You child has selected their costume. You have all the pieces. They talked about dressing up as that person or character for weeks.
And then, BOOM!
They decide they want to be someone completely different. This has been the case in my house in the past 24 hours. For weeks and weeks my son was talking about being 'bones' for Halloween. Just like he was last year. 'Bones' are basically his glow in the dark skeleton pajamas. He loves how they glow and he can make them 'dance' in the dark.
But in a conversation yesterday he decided that nope, he wanted to be Emmet from The Lego Movie. (Read how we created Lego Head marshmallow pops fro his birthday in this post.) I was NOT going to go full yellow make up for this one. I wanted something simple, inexpensive and something he would be comfortable to wear while at his preschool fall festival.
This is my last minute, no sew, DIY Emmet from the Lego Movie costume tutorial! ps. The links are affiliate links.
For the safety vest you will need:
'Safety orange' t-shirt. It doesn't have to be official safety orange but I thought it would be fun to be true to the movie!
Silver Duct tape.
Black Duct tape or in this case, black electrical tape. (We were out of black duct tape and I was NOT going back out to the store!)
Scissors
In your best Emmet voice read the instructions:
Step 1.
Cut off the sleeves of the shirt.
Don't worry about the fabric fraying. Knit fabric doesn't fray nearly as easily as a woven fabric.
Step 2.
Cut a 'V' at the neck of the shirt.
Step 3.
Add vertical stripes of silver duct tape from the shoulders to the waist of the shirt.
Press firmly to ensure they are stuck to the shirt!
Step 4.
Add horizontal stripes of silver duct tape across the chest of the shirt.
Be sure to tuck the tape around the 'V' and at the arm holes. This will help keep it from peeling off as easy.
Step 5.
Add a silver band at the waist being sure to meet the vertical stripes you have from step 3.
Using your black duct tape, or electrical tape, add a belt and pocket outlines to the shirt.
Step 6.
Add a belt buckle with a rectangle of silver duct tape.
Step 7.
Use a permanent marker to make the 'closure' on the buckle. It is basically 2 'C's'.
Step 8.
Stand back and admire your work.
Step 9.
Step 9 is optional but AWESOME!!
Cover a rectangle box red duct tape to create your 'piece of resistance'. Yes, I used an empty wine box. I would have used a shoe box but I had just recycled them!
Attach the Piece of Resistance with more duct tape and you are all set to be Awesome!!
Step 10.
Wear a white undershirt, blue long sleeve shirt and orange pants. As you can see, we don't have safety orange pants at our house. This IS a LAST MINUTE COSTUME. Also we found a construction hat at our local Halloween store. SOMEHOW we didn't have a construction hat in our dress up box. I KNOW that Emmet's hat is red and this one is yellow. BUT like I said...this was a LAST MINUTE costume.
