Every year for my annual Halloween party, I like to change my decorations around. No mantel, centerpiece, or vignette is ever the same from one party to the next. This year, I decided to give my wet bar a "mad scientist" theme. I picked up beakers at the thrift store, displayed a Frankenstein head between bar glasses, and had fun making the final touch: specimen jars.
You'll need some large pickle jars. (Since my husband and son are pickleholics, this was not a difficult project!) Rinse your jars and paint the lids black.
I made two different types of fillings for my jars. For the first set of jars, I used "growing toys" that I found at the store. These are toys that when they sit in water long enough expand way beyond their original size. I happened to find some that were skeletons and bloody severed limbs. Perfect for my mad scientist lab.
In the other pickle jars, I added green coloring to my water and inserted some cheap plastic Halloween masks. I love the way these look, and am thinking I will add glow sticks to them on Halloween.
I wanted to make a set of personalized specimen jars as well. I found small bottles at the store that I adored with washi tape and streamers in Halloween colors. Inside the jars, I placed extreme close-up pictures of my husband and daughter. These are easy to take and print, mine just happened to be from Chuck E. Cheese.
I think the bar is shaping up nicely. I just need fog machine, strobe light, and dry ice in the sink, and all that is left to do is shout, "It’s aliiiiiiiiive!"
