I already shared how I made my daughter a mermaid costume inspired by the book Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet, for her school project, you can read it here.  Today, I'm sharing how I made her Mermaid crown, because you know mermaids wear crowns.... and NO they don't float away.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • A Reliable Glue Gun
  • Sea Shells (if you do not have a beach nearby Michael's sells shells too)
  • Glass stones or gems (Michael's floral department)
  • Paper crown
  • Burlap* optional

I went to Michael's kid's crafts section and found the silver crown for a little under $2, but I knew the shells wouldn't hold up on that alone, I was considering just adding felt to the crown, but I came up with something else.  My 12 year old is going to be the Queen of hearts for Halloween, so she needed a crown too, when we saw a pack of paper crowns we thought they would be perfect for her crown, and then....

LIGHT BULB!

I'll just use a paper crown on the silver crown to adhere the gems and shells too!

I know, I know, genius, right?

I cut the paper crown to fit the silver crown, which originally had pink feathers or some synthetic pink stuff that I ripped off like a mad woman, and glued it on.

(If you're using burlap I may add that on before doing the gems and shells, I didn't do that, but if I could redo the crown, that's what I would do.)

Make sure your glue gun is reliable, therefore you don't have to go out and purchase a new one, because that stinks! One glue gun died on me and the other glue gun I have only takes large glue sticks,  I only had mini glue sticks, a bunch of them.  I had to run to the store and purchase yet another glue gun.

I hot glued on the shells and the gems, trying to piece them together to come up with some kind of design.  The crown originally looked like the picture below, but I wasn't happy with the white cardboard on the sides.

Mermaid Crown almost finished

To cover the cardboard I added the burlap to the sides, and a little more sparkle.
