Three years ago we purchased a Lego Advent Calendar and absolutely loved it. Last year we wanted to re use our super cool Christmas Lego’s from the calendar, a brainstorming session later the LEGO Gingerbread Village was born. Our village is proudly displayed on our kitchen table for the entire Christmas season. This is one of my favorite family activities. Everyone has the opportunity to share their creativity, plus we have fun working together.
What Do You Need For A Lego Gingerbread Village?
We bought the kit below from Target. It is my favorite kit. It comes with five houses and is made of sturdy, quality pieces. The kids each decorated two houses. They have full reign to use their imaginations and creativity. I decorated the last house. We use the icing and candies included in the kit to build and decorate our houses. I did add a can of white frosting and mini-candy canes this year. You could purchase extra candy or use leftover candy from Halloween.
TWO TIPS FOR BUILDING A STRONG GINGERBREAD HOUSE: 1. Use a knife to separate building pieces. You want each building piece to be as straight as possible. 2. Let your houses dry for 30 to 40 minutes after building before adding decorations. We build our houses on a box wrapped with foil. This year I added a piece of wrapping paper on the top too.
I sort candy evenly into bowls for each child. This minimizes the arguing. We use canned white icing as snow on top of houses. It also helps secure candy decorations and Legos. It’s also fun to pick up a box of waffle cones to use as Christmas trees (coated in the white frosting) and shredded coconut for snow.
It is now time to gather Lego people and pieces. This year our Santa is cruising around the village with a cup of hot cocoa while driving his custom built Segway. Everyone else is very busy helping decorate the village. This year we included Duplo Ariel along with Lego Luke Skywalker and a Lego Storm Trooper. We make this part fun for the family. We use everyone’s favorite Lego characters and allow for creativity. We used single Legos for Christmas lights. Our main goal is not creating a beautiful, perfect, Pinterest-worthy village! Our goal is to have fun expressing who we are as a family.
I hope you have fun building your Lego Gingerbread Villages. Please feel free to share your creations on our Facebook page.
