The Best Coloring Books for Grown-Ups

I remember when I was about 10 or so and I received a very grown-up coloring book and a brand new set of colored pencils. I was thrilled by both as coloring pencils were not something I had very often and the coloring book was extra cool because it only had an image on one side. To me, that was a sign of a grown-up coloring book and it was awesome. If you have a similar memory from your childhood, then this post is for you. Or, if you still love the smell of a brand new box of 64 Crayola Crayons. Or, if you love nothing better than a gorgeous box of brand new colored pencils or markers. Coloring books aren't just for kids and here are my favorites. Order one for yourself and enjoy. You won't regret it, I swear.

I have to kick things off with a nod to that childhood coloring book. I'm pretty sure it was from the Dover Press Nature series. Something very much like this Amazing Animals coloring book. If animals aren't your thing -- Dover Press has so many to choose from. Stained Glass Coloring Books and Classic Movie Posters are good places to start but go surf their catalog, you'll find something you love.

I ordered Unicorns Are Jerks and every time I look at it, I start to giggle. You need this coloring book.

I got a review copy of Hillary The Coloring Book and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to watch closely or one of my adult children will steal it when they are home for the holidays. All the pantsuits for me to color, it doesn't get any better than that.

I'm probably the only person I know who doesn't love mandalas or tessellations. I like them, I just don't love them. But there are some great coloring books for both and you should absolutely check them out, if that's your thing. Besides anything by Dover, (I own the North American Indian Design book because my kids all used it for school projects years ago), my people recommend Coloring Animal Mandalas by Wendy Piersall. Wendy has a flower mandalas book coming next year and it looks pretty great. I might have to dip my watercolors back into mandalas next year...

I find all coloring to be meditative, well maybe not when coloring in Unicorns are Jerks because I'm too busy laughing, but you might be interested in the line of spiritual meditative coloring books from Sacred Imprints. Here's a link to the entire series on Amazon.

Some of the coloring books for adults are just beautiful. Truly beautiful, whether you've colored them or not. High on my wish list are The Art of Nature and Secret Garden.

TV and Movie fans will have fun with Twin Peaks, Mad Men, and Game of Thrones coloring books.

Travelers will enjoy New York, Paris, or Italy coloring books.

I've fallen a little in love with Rosie Flo's Kitchen Coloring Book. The parchment paper is a nice touch.

Did I mention I really like animal coloring books? Or, that I have a thing for flamingos? I do and I do. I am trying very hard not to put this Zoo Animals Colouring Book into my Etsy cart. Or the Mid-Century Modern Animals. Both are calling my name.

There are so many great coloring books for adults out there -- go search, I bet you'll find one you love. Probably more than one. If you've already got some great coloring books at home, share your favorites in the comments.
