Mason Jar Snowglobes

There is a very cheesy ABC family movie entitled "Snowglobe" that came out a few years ago starring Christina Milian. The plot of movie focuses on a young woman getting sucked inside a snowglobe and exploring a magical Christmas themed world. However sugary sweet the movie was, it made me remember the snowglobes from my childhood and the magic dwelling within. Inside there were miniature worlds where it was always snowing and all was calm and bright.

Snowglobes from Mason Jars

Some DIY snowglobes you can make with glycerin and water. Mine are essentially dry snowglobes made with epsom salt for snow. For materials I purchased some bottlebrush trees from Amazon in assorted sizes. I also bought a mini cooper matchbox car from Target, red and white striped bakers' twine (from Michaels), Epsom salt, and a miniature deer figure from Amazon. Michaels craft store also has assorted animal figurines. The mason jars I purchased from the grocery store and the mini bells were vintage. You will also need a hot glue gun to attach the trees and figurines.

For the car snowglobe I used a 16 oz wide mouth mason jar. I tied the mini tree onto the car first, hot glue gunning the twine to the bottom of the car so it would stay. Then I hot glue-gunned the wheels of the car to the bottom of the jar, and scooped in some epsom salt. I then tied the top with some bakers' twine and a few jingle bells.  After you secure the lid you can shake the jar to make it snow.

The fawn snowglobe and the other tree snowglobes were done in the same fashion, except I glued the deer and the trees to the lid of the jar not the bottom of the jar, since the jars were a lot taller (and it's more difficult to reach the bottom of the jar to glue the figurines).

glitter figurines

To round out the woodland theme I bedazzled a couple of plastic deer figurines. I consider them good luck and reminiscent of the white stag from the Narnia series. Sadly their baby is trapped inside the snowglobe by an evil craft witch mu-ha-ha. To bedazzle your own creations you cover the figurines with Modge Podge and spoon glitter over them, working in small sections. I'd recommend doing this over a bowl so it doesn't make a mess. I used Martha Stewart glitter in sterling to cover the deer.

At a recent Christmas craft party I hosted we made these snowglobes along with chalkboard wood slice ornaments that I discuss how to make here. Below are some samples from the craft party.

To add some sparkle in the woodland scene I made a simple stick tree, using a trophy as a vase, and dangled some silver ornaments from the boughs. I think Christina Milian would approve :)

Curious if anyone else has childhood memories of snowglobes or even better has seen the movie Snowglobe and can comment on it being festively awesome.
