I’m not a super clumsy person, but I am really cheap. So the idea of my precious phone shattering into oblivion with one more drop and then having to buy a new one sent shivers down my spine. That, and my husband’s frequent inquisition into why I don’t use the phone case I bought, led me to crafty magic. It wasn’t pretty.....THAT’S WHY I STOPPED USING IT! OKAY?!?!
But now it is! It’s so pretty. It glistens in the sun. It gets so many compliments. It’s just badass.
I gathered my supplies:
Phone Case
Mod Podge (or any crafting glue)
Sponge Brush
Tape (scotch or electrical would do best....it must stick well)
Glitter - I used Martha Stewart’s “Turquoise” “Florentine Gold” and “Fire Opal”
2 Clothespins
Scrap Paper
Clear Nail Polish
First, decide on your design. I went for an asymmetrical look. Since I already had three colors of glitter, I spent some time figuring out the pattern and order to complete my lovely case. I started by taping off the biggest chunk for the Turquoise. I made sure the tape line was very straight so that my glitter wouldn’t run together. Then, I used Mod Podge to cover the entire untaped Turquoise section. This is where the clothespins came in handy. I basically used them as you would a “horse” for outdoor projects. I propped the case up so that my glue/glitter section could dry freely without having to paint one portion at a time. I WANTED THIS CASE DONE NOW!!
Then I decided to go ahead and Mod Podge the other end, then add the “Fire Opal.” Its getting pretty already :)
So after waiting like an eternity (maybe an hour), I carefully removed the electrical tape I used and applied Mod Podge to the area for the “Florentine Gold” glitter. I was very careful to keep the glue in a straight line so that my outcome would be precise. ARE YOU DYING YET? I AM!!
Then I added the gold glitter!
After waiting another eternity (another hour or so) I coated my entire case with a clear coat of nail polish. I used a newer bottle because I wanted it to go on smooth and I wanted to have enough. I probably used about a half bottle. This step is so important so that you don’t walk around all glittery for the rest of your life. I mean, I love glitter more than as much as the next girl, but seriously, coat your case.
This is the result! And think of the possibilities....chevron pattern, a picture with a glitter frame, monograms, whatever your heart desires! This is so much better than that old blue case that sat in my junk drawer. And because I had all the supplies, it cost me about 30 minutes of hands-on time and a fat goose egg in my wallet.
